Shed & Garage Permits in Northampton Township

Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Everything you need to know about getting a permit for a shed, garage, or other accessory structure in Northampton Township.

ZIP: 18954, 18966✓ Verified September 2026

Permit Requirements

A permit is required to build or replace a shed or accessory building.

The Building & Codes office is at the Township Administration Building, 55 Township Road, Richboro, PA 18954 (Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.).

Setbacks — Single-Family Detached Homes

A storage shed up to 240 sq ft and 12 ft tall can go in the rear yard, behind the back building line, at least 7 ft from the property line.

Anything larger than 240 sq ft is treated as a detached garage and needs bigger setbacks (15-30 ft depending on lot size).

Setbacks — Attached / Semi-Detached Homes

Accessory buildings must be in the rear yard behind the back building line, at least 5 ft from the property line, and no more than 80 sq ft and 12 ft tall.

How to Apply

Bring a site plan showing where the building will sit and its distances to the property lines.

Call the Building & Codes office at (215) 355-3883 before you start to confirm the rules for your lot.

Honestly? It's usually simpler than it looks

Before you hand this off to anyone, we'd encourage you to just call or stop by the Northampton Township township office. The folks there handle shed and garage permits all the time — they'll give you the forms and walk you through filling them out. For a standard shed, most townships only need three things from you:

A certificate of insurance. Just ask and we'll email you a copy. It's easier to get than most people expect — see what one looks like.

A drawing / spec sheet of your building. We'll email you a copy of this too.

A site plot plan showing where the building will sit on your property. We prepare this for you as part of the $25 permit review — no extra charge. Ours includes your property lines, measurements, and impervious-coverage figures. All you do is confirm where you want the structure placed, and submit it to your township under your own name. See real examples. You can also do it yourself for free using our blank template.

That's typically the whole list for a standard shed. Give it a shot yourself first — a lot of folks are pleasantly surprised at how quick it is. And if you get stuck or would just rather not deal with it, we're glad to help (see below).
