About the Board & Batten

Why folks choose the Board & Batten.

Our Board & Batten shed brings timeless rustic charm to your property with its traditional vertical wood siding pattern. This classic design features alternating wide boards and narrow battens that create a distinctive shadow line and texture that stands out from conventional siding options.

Available in both pine and cedar wood options, these sheds combine authentic craftsmanship with practical storage. The natural wood construction allows for multiple finish options – leave it natural for a rustic look, apply a protective stain to enhance the wood grain, or paint it to match your property.

Each shed includes sturdy X-brace double doors with black hardware for easy access and authentic barn-style appeal. Built with the same quality construction standards as our other sheds, the Pine Board & Batten model offers durability and style in one beautiful package.

Board & Batten questions

What buyers ask about the Board & Batten.

Sizing, door clearance, delivery, permits — the stuff that comes up when folks are deciding on a board & batten. If your question isn’t here, give us a call or text.

Pine vs Cedar Board & Batten — which one should I pick?

Both are real solid wood with vertical board-and-batten profile, but they age very differently. Pine is more affordable (8×12 starts at $2,795 vs. $3,295 for cedar) and takes paint or stain beautifully — the right call if you plan to finish the building or repaint it down the road. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, insect-repellent thanks to its natural oils, and develops a gorgeous silver-gray patina if left unfinished. Pick cedar if you want zero-maintenance natural aging; pick pine if you want a finished painted look or want to save roughly $400–$1,200 depending on size.

How does Board & Batten compare to LP SmartSide on durability?

Different tradeoffs. LP SmartSide is engineered wood designed to fight rot and termites with chemistry (5/50 year LP-backed warranty); pine board-and-batten is real solid wood that needs maintenance to last — plan on a quality stain or paint every 5–7 years. Cedar board-and-batten is real solid wood that doesn’t need finishing because the natural oils do the work. So: LP for set-and-forget low-maintenance with engineered durability; cedar for natural longevity with no chemicals; pine for character + budget if you don’t mind periodic restaining. Pick based on whether maintenance bothers you.

Will the pine siding warp or split over time?

Solid pine moves with seasons — that’s why we use vertical board-and-batten: the batten covers any gap that opens between boards as wood expands and contracts. We mill the boards from kiln-dried Eastern White Pine and pre-finish the surface so the building arrives stable. Long-term, expect a few hairline checks (small cracks) on the wider boards — that’s the wood breathing, not failing. As long as you keep the building stained or painted every 5–7 years, the structure will last 30+ years.

What’s the most popular Board & Batten size?

10×12 (starting at $3,295 in pine) is the runaway favorite — it’s the smallest size where the vertical board-and-batten pattern looks proportional, and it fits a riding mower with garden tool storage to the side. Buyers chasing the "real Pennsylvania farmhouse outbuilding" look usually go 12×16 ($4,695 pine) or 12×20 ($5,595 pine). Below 8×12 the boards look too tall relative to the building.

Is the Board & Batten delivered fully assembled?

Yes — every Board & Batten through 12×24 is built fully assembled at our Parkesburg, PA shop and delivered on a low-profile mule trailer. 14-wide Board & Battens (14×28 and 14×32) ship as a panelized kit for on-site assembly over 1–2 days. Solid wood siding is heavier than LP SmartSide or vinyl, so we use a beefier trailer than for the smaller models — worth flagging tight access routes when you request a quote.

Do I need to stain or seal the pine before delivery?

No — we pre-finish every Pine Board & Batten at the shop with a quality oil-based exterior stain in your choice of color (or natural). The building arrives ready to use and weatherproof. You’ll need to re-stain in 5–7 years to keep it looking sharp. Cedar Board & Batten is delivered unfinished by default since the natural patina is the appeal — if you want the cedar pre-stained, mention it on your quote and we’ll add it to the build.

Fast Delivery

Ordered a 10×16 Quaker on a Tuesday, delivered the following Monday. Crew was professional and the shed looks better in person than in the photos.

Value

My Classic shed was $2,000 less than a similar model at the big-box store — and it’s built ten times better. LP SmartSide, real 2×4 framing, architectural shingles. No comparison.
