About the Gable Dormer

Why folks choose the Gable Dormer.

Our Gable Dormer Shed features a distinctive peaked dormer that combines classic A-frame styling with enhanced visual interest and additional natural light. The triangular gable design echoes traditional New England architecture, making it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking timeless appeal that complements colonial, farmhouse, and craftsman home styles.

Built on the proven Classic Workshop platform with the same 6'4" to 6'8" sidewalls (depending on width) and premium construction, this model adds the signature gable window as a focal point. Quality Amish craftsmanship and 30-year architectural shingles deliver both superior functionality and neighborhood-defining curb appeal.

Need On-Site Construction?

All standard sheds & garages up to 14′ wide are delivered fully assembled and placed with our Shed Mule. The Mule fits through most gate openings, but the building needs to clear every fence, gate, and passage — you need at least 2′ wider than the structure. If the building won’t fit through your gate, you can remove a fence section or go with an on-site build (30% surcharge). The Mule also can’t handle very steep hills or heavy mud.

Gable Dormer questions

What buyers ask about the Gable Dormer.

Sizing, door clearance, delivery, permits — the stuff that comes up when folks are deciding on a gable dormer. If your question isn’t here, give us a call or text.

Gable Dormer vs Transom Dormer — which one should I pick?

Pick the Gable Dormer if you want maximum architectural impact — the peaked dormer projecting from the roof gives the building a real "miniature house" silhouette that looks at home next to traditional or farmhouse-style homes. Pick the Transom Dormer if you want maximum interior daylight — its horizontal window band lets in roughly 3× the light. Both have a 6-pitch roof, so there’s no loft space under the dormers themselves — the dormers are for natural light and curb appeal. A 4-foot loft can be added at the gable ends as an upgrade on either model.

Why pick the Gable Dormer over a basic Workshop or Quaker?

Three reasons: (1) the dormer breaks up an otherwise plain roof and dramatically improves curb appeal — this is the most photogenic shed in the lineup; (2) the dormer window adds natural light high on the gable wall where a standard sidewall window can’t reach; (3) the peaked dormer gives the building a "miniature house" silhouette that blends with farmhouse and traditional homes. The tradeoff is price — a 12×16 Gable Dormer ($6,635 in LP SmartSide) runs about $1,400 more than the comparable Workshop. Worth it if architectural appeal matters to you.

What’s the most popular Gable Dormer size?

10×16 (starting at $5,910 in LP SmartSide) is the favorite — it’s right-sized for the dormer to look proportional on the front facade and works great as both a presentable storage shed or a light studio. 12×20 ($7,255) is the second pick for buyers who want extra floor space and the dormer’s architectural impact at full scale. Below 10×16 the dormer can start to look slightly chunky relative to the building.

Does the Gable Dormer have usable loft space?

Not under the dormer itself — the 6-pitch roof doesn’t leave enough headroom there. However, a 4-foot loft can be added as an upgrade at the gable ends of the building, away from the dormer. That’s where we put lofts on all dormer models. The dormer is there for natural light and architectural character. If you need a full usable loft, step up to the Hi-Wall Barn or Dutch Barn (gambrel roofs with more loft volume), or the Portable Two Story for a full second floor.

Is the Gable Dormer delivered fully assembled?

Yes — every Gable Dormer up to 14′ wide ships fully assembled from our Parkesburg, PA shop on a specialized trailer. The dormer adds height during transit (roughly 13′6″ tall vs. 12′6″ for a flat-roof shed of equivalent footprint), so we always confirm low-hanging branches and overhead wires on the access route during the quote stage. 14-wide Gable Dormers can also be delivered fully assembled — we handle the road permit and pilot car ($7.50/mi one-way). Your access path needs to be at least 2 feet wider than the building. The Shed Mule fits through most gate openings, but the building must clear every fence and passage — if it won’t fit, you can remove a fence section or go with an on-site build (30% surcharge). The Mule also can’t handle very steep hills or heavy mud.

Do I need a permit for a Gable Dormer?

Same threshold as any other shed: most townships in PA, NJ, DE, and MD allow under 200 sq ft (10×20 or smaller) without a building permit; setbacks still apply. The Gable Dormer starts at 8×12 (96 sq ft) and goes to 14×48, so the smaller end is permit-free in most jurisdictions. The peaked-dormer roofline can occasionally trigger HOA architectural review where a flat-roof Mini Barn would slide through. Worth a quick call to your zoning office and HOA before ordering, especially for buyers placing the building near the street.

Ordered a 10×16 Quaker on a Tuesday, delivered the following Monday. Crew was professional and the shed looks better in person than in the photos.

Value

My Classic shed was $2,000 less than a similar model at the big-box store — and it’s built ten times better. LP SmartSide, real 2×4 framing, architectural shingles. No comparison.

Craftsmanship

You can tell this is Amish-built the moment you walk inside. Framing, floor, trim — everything is straight and square. Worth every penny.
